4 hours in Hanoi

November 30, 2013

Travelling on my own back to the UK in August I had chosen the budget option of Vietnam Airlines. I’d flown worse. The one bonus was a stopover in Hanoi on the return. There was no mucking around.

I took a taxi straight to Gia Truyen Pho, 49 Bat Dan Street. A whole in the wall kind of deal. The queue was reassuringly long. The pho was of course excellent.

It was followed by a decent coffee overlooking the lake, a giant turtle, motorbike taxi, a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & the bizarre national museum.

There was also a very heated argument with a taxi driver trying to charge me $50 for a 5 minute journey – I suggested calling the police. He called my bluff (smart move on his behalf – prospect of dodgy police etc.). We compromised on $15.

I finished at Cha Ca La Vong, 14 Cha Ca Street for some fish in oil and greens with surly service.

It was brief, but fun.
