For a country famed for its seafood, it’s pretty hard to find really good seafood restaurants. So much care is taken here to represent fish the best it can be. I wish there were more places like this. Pics from a couple of meals. Go.

Finally visited this highly rated Korean place the day before it closed last year. It was great. Shoutout to a Korean steak tartare and of course, the pork belly.

The Star, 80 Pyrmont St, Sydney

A return visit from last year. Thanks Sean. This time with Paul Carmichael at the helm, bringing Caribbean flavours to fine dining. It makes for a novel dining experience, especially with the flavours and spices turned up to 11. Tastebuds get a good working out. Occasionally the heat dominates too much, but better than another run of the mill degustation. 

Rockpool (Bar), Sydney

Friday night in Sydney. On the martinis. Genius idea to prop up the bar at Rockpool on Bridge St. (Soon to close).

Not your average bar food. Smoked oysters, caviar finger sandwiches, chicken wings with konbu butter. 

Evened things out with low brow tinnies and shots at the next bar.

Brutal hangover. 10/10 would do again.

Another rough day in Melbourne. Needed a dinner to soothe the soul. Italian of course. Glass of wine in hand by 5pm. Chefs menu. Simple, excellent ingredients – arancini, tomatoes/burrata & bizarrely two squid courses (why?) duck/gnocchi & deconstructed tiramisu. Worth it.

A revisit back in Feb. Easily the best meal I’ve had in Sydney. Excellent fusion of east/west. Good generosity in terms of food & wine. Good chat with fellow lone diner. 

Crab/vinegar jelly, sous vide squid, scallop/macadamia cream, caviar/potato/dashi, abalone, ‘sushi’, duck, wagyu/mushrooms & host of desserts, including fennel ice cream. The only dish that was an acquired taste.

Not in Melbourne. After a 30 minute taxi ride I discovered it was in Northcote. Last minute booking etc. Big open plan kitchen, lots of fawning customers. Running the gauntlet between style & substance. Green tomatoes are clearly ingredient du-jour. tuna, salmon, lamb, duck. Chocolate, Doughnut. Text book degustation. Worth the Uber.

Four and a half years at Leos. Leaving lunch at Lucios. A great long lunch spot. Loved the silverbeet taglioni with crab. 

Followed by laser-tag. Followed by a 24 hr journey back to the UK. That’s how I roll…..
