For a country famed for its seafood, it’s pretty hard to find really good seafood restaurants. So much care is taken here to represent fish the best it can be. I wish there were more places like this. Pics from a couple of meals. Go.

Finally visited this highly rated Korean place the day before it closed last year. It was great. Shoutout to a Korean steak tartare and of course, the pork belly.

The Star, 80 Pyrmont St, Sydney

A return visit from last year. Thanks Sean. This time with Paul Carmichael at the helm, bringing Caribbean flavours to fine dining. It makes for a novel dining experience, especially with the flavours and spices turned up to 11. Tastebuds get a good working out. Occasionally the heat dominates too much, but better than another run of the mill degustation.

A revisit back in Feb. Easily the best meal I’ve had in Sydney. Excellent fusion of east/west. Good generosity in terms of food & wine. Good chat with fellow lone diner. 

Crab/vinegar jelly, sous vide squid, scallop/macadamia cream, caviar/potato/dashi, abalone, ‘sushi’, duck, wagyu/mushrooms & host of desserts, including fennel ice cream. The only dish that was an acquired taste.

Four and a half years at Leos. Leaving lunch at Lucios. A great long lunch spot. Loved the silverbeet taglioni with crab. 

Followed by laser-tag. Followed by a 24 hr journey back to the UK. That’s how I roll…..

Nice inventive Italian – worth the escape from Terrigal. Obligatory sashimi & tartare. Pasta was standout as you would hope; a memorable spelt ravioli with liquid burnt butter & squid ink pasta was beurre blanc, sea urchin & bottarga. Very cute herb sorbet to finish.

Birthday Friday lunch, made memorable for being interrupted by a mini-work crisis. Political fun & games. A shame because this was very decent. Predominantly small plates with no set narrative, so one ends up with entrees such as tartare (again) and cheeseburger (of course). The gnudi was worth every good cliche.

Roast chicken is a bit of a no-no restaurant order, but I would defend this one. Look at it. However, I wouldn’t defend the garlic chips on the greens. Seriously, why? And relax.

I like these kind of places – fewer rules, everyone treated as adults.

Seriously good inventive restaurant with lots of grey & hidden food – Lamb tartare, crab, mussels with creamed potatoes & chicken skin. Nice riff on beef pho. Carrot mousse. ‘Popcorn’ with pork crackling. Would return.
