Rockpool (Bar), Sydney

June 29, 2016

Friday night in Sydney. On the martinis. Genius idea to prop up the bar at Rockpool on Bridge St. (Soon to close).

Not your average bar food. Smoked oysters, caviar finger sandwiches, chicken wings with konbu butter.

Evened things out with low brow tinnies and shots at the next bar.

Brutal hangover. 10/10 would do again.

Family bonding time. A beautiful spring day. Negroni, rabbit fettuccine, turbot, affogato. Done. Peerless.

Under-rated, criminally overlooked. This is indulgent, theatrical, with charming British service complete with dodgy teeth.

Beautiful ingredients. Proper saucing. No cheap ingredients here – caviar, foie gras, Scottish langoustine, sea bass, Anjou pigeon. Special mention to the veal sweetbreads. Woah.

Full of regulars. Closeted feel. No need to mention Brexit. Worth wearing a tie for.

Sri Lankan curry with a dear friend. And fried egg. Rich, nuanced, cheap & awesome

The saddest of news brought me back to the UK. Family time. Real, old-school food required.

Suffolk Coast, foreboding skies and Dover Sole served as simply as possible.

A lovely no frills place (with Pouilly Fume).

Another rough day in Melbourne. Needed a dinner to soothe the soul. Italian of course. Glass of wine in hand by 5pm. Chefs menu. Simple, excellent ingredients – arancini, tomatoes/burrata & bizarrely two squid courses (why?) duck/gnocchi & deconstructed tiramisu. Worth it.

A revisit back in Feb. Easily the best meal I’ve had in Sydney. Excellent fusion of east/west. Good generosity in terms of food & wine. Good chat with fellow lone diner.

Crab/vinegar jelly, sous vide squid, scallop/macadamia cream, caviar/potato/dashi, abalone, ‘sushi’, duck, wagyu/mushrooms & host of desserts, including fennel ice cream. The only dish that was an acquired taste.

Still very good. Just a few pics, not the whole meal.
